2025 Interior Design Trends: What’s In, What’s Out

Writer: Alex SallengerAlex Sallenger

As I step into 2025, I’m seeing interior design continue to evolve in many ways. More than ever, my focus is on creating spaces that are not just beautiful but deeply functional and tailored to my clients’ lifestyles. Working in Gig Harbor, I’m inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the way homeowners here embrace both comfort and practicality. This year, I’m incorporating more sustainability, personality, and adaptability into my designs. Here’s what I’m loving—and what I’m ready to leave behind.

What’s In

1. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

Sustainability is no longer a trend; it’s a necessity. I’m bringing in more reclaimed wood, recycled metal, and biodegradable materials wherever possible. Clients are asking for energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures, which I love incorporating into my designs.

2. Multifunctional Spaces

With remote work now a mainstay, many of my clients already have dedicated home offices. Now, I’m focusing on making these spaces more versatile—think home offices that double as guest rooms, with stylish sleeper sofas or Murphy beds that blend seamlessly into the design. Creating multi-use environments allows homeowners to maximize space without sacrificing style or comfort.

3. Bold Color Palettes

I’ve always loved a neutral foundation, but I’m excited to see more clients embracing deep blues, rich greens, and warm terracotta tones. These bold colors add so much character and dimension to a space.

4. Texture Layering

One of my favorite ways to add depth to a space is through texture. Bouclé, velvet, natural stone, rough-hewn wood, and woven accents are all making their way into my projects this year.

5. Vintage and Handcrafted Pieces

There’s something special about incorporating vintage or handcrafted items into a space. Heirloom furniture, artisan ceramics, and one-of-a-kind decor pieces bring so much personality and soul to a home.

What’s Out

1. All-White Interiors

While I appreciate the timelessness of a neutral palette, all-white spaces are feeling a bit sterile. I’m bringing in warmer, richer tones that create a more inviting atmosphere.

2. Fast Furniture

I’m steering my clients away from cheap, mass-produced furniture that won’t last. Instead, I’m prioritizing high-quality, sustainable pieces that stand the test of time.

3. Open Concept Everything

Open layouts still have their place, but I’m finding that clients are craving more defined spaces. Creating intentional zones for work, relaxation, and gathering is a priority in my designs.

4. Minimalism Without Character

While I love clean lines and simplicity, I’m focusing on curated, meaningful minimalism—spaces that feel lived-in and personal rather than cold and empty.

5. Mass-Produced Decor

I’m moving away from cookie-cutter decor in favor of unique, story-driven pieces. Whether it’s a vintage find or a custom-made item, I want every element in a space to feel intentional.

Final Thoughts

Design trends will always evolve, but my goal is to create spaces that feel both current and timeless. By prioritizing sustainability, functionality, and personal style, I’m ensuring that the homes of Gig Harbor not only look beautiful but also truly enhance their everyday lives.
